@work: Recycling for retailers

IT recycling for retailers

You can turn returned goods into a profitable revenue stream.

Remploy has the know-how to refurbish computers and remarket them. We are already working with a leading high street retailer to convert returned goods into useful revenue.

Case Study: A leading high street retailer

A leading retailer has been looking to expand their position within the rapidly developing IT market, in order to secure the position as one of the leading high street retailers of PCs. Today, they are Europe's largest seller of electrical goods operating in 14 countries, employing over 40,000 people across Europe.

Consumer electrical goods are returned within their warranty period for a variety of reasons, and often are in perfect condition, representing lost value and a potential disposal problem for the retailer.

To obtain increased value from their returned goods, many retailers re-market returned equipment once they have ensured any items in need of repair have been restored to good working order. A primary area of focus is IT equipment - repairing items, ensuring all components are present, and removing prior customer data from the machine ready for resale.

For this leading retailer, Remploy proposed a cost effective route for the inspection, repair, refurbishment, data cleansing and repackaging of returned own brand equipment. This equipment is then resold, providing their customers with the additional choice of purchasing full specification, refurbished items at a lower cost.

Remploy are now receiving regular batches of equipment which are all tested, repaired, assembled, data cleansed, with their original software replaced, cleaned and re-boxed ready for re-sale within our sites across the UK, ready for resale as refurbished items to the public with a full 12 month guarantee.

The competitive rates, quality and speed of the work provided by Remploy helped the retailer to maximise resale values of returned IT equipment before value was lost. As a result their customers also benefit from increased choice and a more economic method of purchasing their IT equipment.

What's more, Remploy's clients have been able to 'give something back' and enhance their brand further by supporting Remploy in their mission to provide sustainable employment for disabled people. This contract is currently enabling Remploy to fully employ 12 members of staff directly on this piece of business.

WEEE for retailers

Selling Electrical or Electronic Equipment (EEE) to end-users in the UK carries some obligations under WEEE regulations.

As a distributor of household EEE you must facilitate the take-back of household WEEE by:

  • allowing WEEE from private households to be returned to store

or

  • joining a distributor scheme. In this case you must provide information on the facilities available to consumers for the separate collection of household WEEE in your area. You will also need to provide information to customers on the environmental aspects of the products when they become waste
